Slot canyons are narrow and deep crevices in the landscape that were formed over a period of millions of years by the erosive action of torrential rains and flash floods. In the state of Utah there are hundreds of these geological formations whose walls are reddish in color due to the large deposits of Navajo sandstone in the area. In recent years hiking inside these narrow formations has become the popular outdoors activity called canyoneering. This new sport comes with many risks, the most serious one is flash floods that can occur suddenly with any rain in the area. These canyons can be as long as a few miles and escaping a flash flood may be impossible in some instances. Many hikers have perished inside these canyons.
This fall I travelled to Utah to visit some of their magnificent National Parks with my wife Roberta and her brother Robert.
One of our scheduled adventures consisted in hiking a very narrow and deep canyon in Grand Staircase- Escalante National Monument with professional guide Shawn Miller. Traversing this canyon of 2 miles in length took all day and a tremendous effort on all of our parts. We encountered many narrow passages, large boulders that created difficult obstacles as well as tarantula spiders and other poisonous insects.
Today I am 73 years old and am very proud of having successfully accomplished this very difficult adventure.

Los cañones de ranura son grietas estrechas y profundas en el paisaje que se formaron durante millones de años por la acción erosiva de lluvias torrenciales e inundaciones repentinas. En el Estado de Utah hay cientos de estas formaciones geológicas cuyas paredes son de color rojizo, debido a los grandes depósitos de arenisca navajo en el área. En los últimos años, caminar dentro de estas formaciones estrechas se ha convertido en la popular actividad al aire libre llamada barranquismo. Este nuevo deporte conlleva muchos riesgos, el más grave son las inundaciones repentinas que pueden ocurrir con cualquier lluvia en el área. Estos cañones pueden tener una longitud de varias millas, por esa razón escapar de una inundación repentina puede ser imposible en algunos casos. Muchos excursionistas han perecido dentro de estos cañones.
Este otoño viajé a Utah para visitar algunos de sus magníficos Parques Nacionales con mi esposa Roberta y su hermano Robert.
Una de nuestras aventuras programadas consistió en caminar por un cañón muy estrecho y profundo en Grand Staircase- Escalante National Monument con el guía profesional Shawn Miller. Atravesar este cañón de 2 millas de longitud tomó todo el día y un tremendo esfuerzo en todas nuestras partes. Nos encontramos con muchos pasajes estrechos, grandes rocas que creaban obstáculos difíciles, así como arañas, tarántulas y otros insectos venenosos.
Hoy tengo 73 años y estoy muy orgulloso de haber logrado con éxito esta aventura tan difícil.
