In spite of all it’s people, traffic and congestion, Miami is still a Mecca for triple digit tarpon…all within sight of downtown.
During the winter months tarpon stack up in and around Government Cut as well as the other major inlets and even the bridges inside the bay. Theories vary from shrimp runs, mullet migrations and water temperatures but whatever the reason the tarpon are easily accessible from December thru June and night time and early mornings ate most productive. Guides like Capt Carl Ball (Captball@bellsouth.net) and Capt Russ Kleppinger (captruss@bellsouth.net) literally put novice anglers onto 100lb+ tarpon on a daily basis. Most of the time, heavy spinning rods, 30 lb braid and live bait are the weapons of choice but throwing a big black fly on a 12 wt rod and a sinking line can also be very effective. If you’ve never tried fishing at night, you’re missing a rare treat and should really contact Russ to set up a trip. Carl usually starts his day before dawn and chases tarpon until the bite slows down then heads south after permit and bonefish. Either of these experienced captains can take you on a tour of Miami that you’ll not soon forget.
